Issue 4328, June 2007

Next club meeting is June 25, 2007, 7:30 pm at West Side Café 7950 Camp Bowie

Presidents Corner

No Report this month. See you at the June meeting.

Will Campbell

President, Ft. Worth Thunderbirds

Vice Presidents Corner

As I think about the club, again, I am very proud to be a member and serving as the Vice President.  The one item that stands out in my mind about the T-Birds is the amount of activity in the club when it comes to events and most importantly the amount of members who are involved with these activities.  Think about it….  The SAE event, War Bird event, Old Farts event and the Scale Masters all of which take a lot of dedicated people to execute in a flawless fashion.  I know I speak for many of the members when I say "Thanks" to all of you that help put these events together and continue to reinforce the reputation of our organization.

(Vice Presidents Corner – continued)

If some of you have not participated or volunteered for these events, I suggest you let be known that you are available to help in the future.  I find that the camaraderie with other club members is priceless and we all know that we can always use volunteers.  Your participation truly does show your commitment to our hobby and to the club.

I just had the opportunity to fly at an event in Temple, TX that was hosted by the Temple Aero Modelers.  It was a Sunday fun fly that included the obligatory rolls, loops and spot landings along with a balloon bust that proved to be a challenge for me.  By the way, I tried to supplement my balloon busting skills with a BB gun but found out it is against the rules; Darn!  However, Jason Skrasek busted an amazing 5 out of 6 balloons and took home a trophy recognizing his acute piloting skills (Personally, I think he used a BB gun).  Great job Jason in representing the T-Birds!  Members from the T-Birds that attended this event were: Len Minco, Gary Alphin, Monty Smith, Dave D’Arcy, Blake Arnold and Jason Skrasek.  We had a ball.

At the Temple event, we heard many complimentary remarks about the Ft. Worth Thunderbirds and the support that we give the hobby.  You can’t help feeling a bit proud when you hear comments like that.  Another treat at the event was getting to meet Jim Rice.  Many of you know that Jim is the new AMA District VIII Vice President.  Jim seems to be a great guy that is genuinely committed to moving our hobby forward.  I enjoyed meeting him and hopefully we can arrange to have him at one of our events in the future.

Take care, fly safe and

See you on takeoff…………………….

May 2007 Club Meeting Minutes

There was no meeting in May.

Lori Campbell, Secretary

From the Treasury

Things are still rocking right a long for the club, which still puts us well on our way to another good year.

Two more events have come and gone since our last report, the Old Fart Four Stroke Fly In and the Scale Masters. The weather was good for the first and kind of wet for the later. The Old Fart was well in the black and I have the information for the Scale Masters at the time of this report.

The Club is still gaining new member, please make welcome our latest new members Jimmy Newton and Jay Stitton along with returning member Angel Rosado.

Well that’s all for now, see you at the meeting, so be there or be square.

Respectfully,

Oscar Slaughter

Treasurer

OLD FARTS FOUR STROKE FLYIN

On June 13,2007 the Old Farts fly in was officially opened. There were 22 registered pilots and the event got off with a bang when Terry Thorpe took to the air in his cub about 09:00. He was followed by numerous other old farts and a few young-uns this year.   About noon we had the presentations of certificates to each pilot authorizing them as certified Old Farts.  The certificates were designed by Joe Jopling and they brought a smile to everyone’s face. The awards are as follows:

1. First to Fly        Terry Thorpe

2.Oldest Pilot        Porter Wallis (82)

3. Best WW I        Ernie Harway

4. Best WWII        Woody Lake

5. Best Civilian     Terry Thorpe

6. Worst take off    Oscar Slaughter

Then there was the worst landing but no trophy was awarded. A S.A.D. button will be awarded to Bob Hoover at the June Meeting. In closing a grateful thank you to Tim Timmons, J C Dean, and Bob Bishop for helping this years Old Farts Fly In into the Thunderbird History books as another great success story.

Thanks

Chuck McLeroy

SCALE MASTERS

Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate this past weekend. Crosswinds from the East and torrential rains dampened (no pun intended) this year’s Scale Masters Qualifier. Registered pilots numbered about 12 and only a handful of brave souls pushed the envelope to fly. Lawrence Harville flew his A1E Skyraider to first place in Expert followed by Woody Lake in second place with his Cub. Final standings will be announced at this month’s meeting.
