Vice Presidents Corner

Well it was a beautiful day to fly on Sunday April 15th.  Mid 70 degree temperature range, winds a refreshing 5-10 mph and the sun was high in the sky.  What made the day special other than I was finally done with my taxes (ouch) was that Randy Martin had a troop of Cub Scouts show up at the field for their introduction to RC flying.  What a blast!

Everyone pitched in to help out and I have to tell you, seeing the smile and wonderment of 6 to 8 year olds actually flying the aircraft was just terrific.  After all, they are the future of the hobby.  Woody, Terry, Oscar and Randy all manned the buddy boxes and had a great time with the help of other club members

with these young aviators.  A special thanks goes to Oscar for picking up the "Delta Darts" for the kids as a memento of their visit to the field.  The troop leaders were already planning a meeting with the scouts to put them together.    Thanks to all for making this a very rewarding and exciting day for the kids.

I also want to remind you that the SAE event is coming up on May 4, 5 and 6.  Recently we had a meeting on the topic and I want to thank all of the people that are taking charge, running a committee or just saying; "I’ll volunteer."  With a potential 500 participants and a representation of 72 Colleges and Universities from around the world, this is a Bit of an undertaking.  We need volunteers!  I would ask all of you to look at your schedules and make it known to Will Campbell and myself if you have not volunteered yet and would like too.  From what I hear this will be a very rewarding experience for everyone.

See you on Takeoff………………….

March 2007 Club Meeting Minutes – Continued

This is one of largest SAE events ever and our club needs to have a good showing. Dave Dingman/Oliver Alvarado finalized the plans detailed last month with the Corps of Engineers and the Triathlon Committee. Reminder: we will need a few club members to man the gate at the new temporary entrance for an hour on Saturday morning at 9am.

We need club members to volunteer to work the event – all 3 days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Sign up sheet was circulated at the club meeting. We also need a boat for aircraft recovery. Please see Dave Dingman.

Safety/Technical inspections will be done at the Green Oaks Hotel at 9am. We need 6 technical inspectors. We will use the same checklist as the last event. Prime Rib lunch provided! These inspections will run throughout the day – 72 teams!

Oliver has brought in Red Bull as a major contributor/sponsor to the event. They are bringing out the energy team and will be passing out samples of Red Bull energy drinks. Oliver is researching the possibilities of Red Bull sponsoring the bottled water for the event.

Soda Springs BBQ had to back out of concessions at the event, as they do not have a concessionaire’s license. Will is meeting with a vendor recommended by Soda Springs BBQ.

Let’s Race – Claude Barnes

Practice held last Sunday. We measured the distances and noted that we complied with the AMA rules. It was a lot of fun with some great competition. Next practice race is Sunday, April 22nd at 1pm. Hard hats are needed for all pilots.

Hellcat Drawing – Tom Blakney won the Hellcat! Congrats Tom!

New Business:

Start-up Tables – Randy has a contact that will deliver tables to the club at $85 per table. Randy made a motion that we buy new tables for the field. Concerns were brought up regarding the use of the current stand to tune/break-in the engines, having the tables near the pilots and facing the stand so that the props are better positioned. Next steps – officers to discuss at the officer meeting.

Demonstration – Westover Hills Elementary School: 10am – 2pm Saturday, March 31st. Come and support the event. Call Woody or Oscar to participate.

Warbirds: May 19th Terry Thorpe. Volunteers needed for impound, registration, and to work the food table. 8am – 2pm. Sign up after the meeting.

Show and Tell:

Joe Jopling: Model of the first control line airplane ever kitted – circa 1938-39.

Bill Campbell: 1963 Single Channel radio with escapements (instead of servos)

WARBIRD 2007

Attention all Thunderbird pilots. The 11th annual Thunderbirds Memorial Warbird Fly- in is sanction for the 19th of May 2007. This is the eleventh year we’ve been hosting this event. This is a fun scale event for warbird pilots. If it looks like a warbird, leaks like a warbird, and flies like a warbird, then it probably is a warbird. Looking for volunteers to man the Administrative, Operation, and Mess areas. Good music, give-a-ways, and promotions. Safety briefing at 0900 hrs. Get ready as we hope and plan on this to be the biggest and best ever.

Terry and Woody

DOOLITTLE RAIDERS

On April 1, 1942 16 highly modified North American Aviation B-25B Mitchell medium bombers, their five-man volunteer crews, and maintenance personnel were loaded onto the USS Hornet at Alameda, California. Each plane carried four 500 lb bombs (three high-explosive and one incendiary), two .50-caliber machine guns in an upper turret, a .30-caliber machine gun in the nose, and extra fuel tanks.

On the morning of April 18, at a distance of about 650 miles from Japan, the task force was sighted by a Japanese picket boat, which radioed an attack warning to Japan. A decision was made to launch the B-25's immediately --- a day early and about 200 miles farther from Japan than planned. The planes began arriving over Japan about noon, and bombed military targets in Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe, Osaka, and Nagoya. Although some B-25's encountered light anti-aircraft fire and a few enemy fighters over Japan, no bomber was shot down or severely damaged. Fifteen of the 16 planes then proceeded southwest along the southern coast of Japan and across the East China Sea towards eastern China, where recovery bases supposedly awaited them. One B-25, extremely low on fuel, headed instead for the closer landmass of Russia.

Following the Doolittle Raid, most of the B-25 crews that came down in China eventually made it to safety with the help of Chinese civilians.

The Doolittle Raiders have held an annual reunion almost every year since the late 1940's. The high point of each reunion is a solemn, private ceremony in which the surviving Raiders perform a roll call, then

(Continued on page 8)

Page 7

(Doolittle Raiders – continued)

toast their fellow Raiders who passed away during the previous year. Specially engraved silver goblets,

one for each of the 80 Raiders, are used for this toast. When only two Raiders remain alive, they will drink a final toast using the vintage bottle of Hennessy cognac, which has accompanied the goblets to each Raider reunion since 1960. Only 16 Raiders are still alive and only eight were able to attend the 64th anniversary reunion held in Dayton, April 18--20, 2006. The oldest Raider is now 93 and the youngest is 84. The 65th anniversary reunion is to be held in San Antonio, April 2007.

Cub Scouts Visit Thunderbird Field

Cub Scouts visited our field Sunday 15th of April for a day of flight instruction and fun. Judging from the smiles on their faces I’d say all had a good time. Many thanks to Randy for setting up the event, for James Brown’s Helicopter Demo, and our instructor pilots: Len, Terry, Oscar, and Woody. My apologies if I’ve forgotten anyone.
